The red coral (Corallium rubrum) is the carbonate of lime axis of the stem of a gorgonian (Gorgonidae of the Alcyonaria Group), chiefly found in the Mediterranean Sea. It lives in semi-dark habitats, in the coralligenous zone of sublittoral hard bottoms. Harvested commercially for jewelry, Torre del Greco (Italy) is the main centre of coral-working industries. A studio photograph taken on a white background.
