View SW of the Glenfinnan Monument at the head of Loch Shiel, Lochaber, Highland, Scotland, UK. Column, surrounding wall & plaques were erected 1815 by chieftain MacDonald of Glenaladale to commemorate the dead of Clan Donald & the other Highlanders who died supporting Bonnie Prince Charlie in the '45. The monument stands close to the spot where Prince Charles Edward Stuart landed on 19 August 1745 & raised the standard of his father James VIII aka 'The Old Pretender': the clans & chieftains flocked to his flag. The statue sculpted by John Greenshields (1795-1835) was added c 1834 to the top about 20 years after the column was put up. The figure is often referred to as a generic kilted Highland soldier but many believe it represents the Prince himself: the clothes & sporran are those of a gentleman, eagle feathers in the bonnet denote high rank as does the star of the Most Ancient and Most Noble Order of the Thistle on the figure's breast.
